The Buffalo
American Buffalo are one of the last truly unspoiled mammals on this northern continent. One hundred plus years ago the white man foolishly nearly wiped these animals out. But the near extinction of the species may have been a blessing in disguise. The unavailability of these animals has prevented errant bovine rancher's mentality from tampering with this magnificent animal's genetics. Most committed buffalo ranchers agree that these creatures were created correctly the first time and need no modifications from us. Selective breeding or modified characteristics carries a price. I am sure we have all seen it in the lack of structural soundness, breeding, birthing and a host of other problems found in many of buffalo's bovine relatives, as well as in any cat, dog, poultry or horse breeds we have manipulated.Buffalo managed and thrived for a very long time without human intervention. We believe that in order to maintain the hardiness and disease resistant advantages of this species a new mindset must take precedence. The best animals are not necessarily the fastest gaining, but an animal that is structurally sound, fertile, aggressive and dominant. Our ranching practices strive to keep survival of the fittest in mind. The minute we forget that foundational rule of nature we breed a weaker animal. That's why we breed for Protein with ATTITUDE!™
Since the turn of the century the number of public and privately owned herds has increased dramatically. In fact, animal numbers are growing by geometric proportions as demand for healthy alternative red meat continues to rise. These are big aggressive animals. If kept only for viewing or "pet" status, there would not be many of them around. It is the restoration of this magnificent animal to its rightful place as a sustaining element in a healthful diet that actually encourages growth in heard numbers and quality.
Buffalo are coming back! Can you hear their hoof beats?
